Father of Pop Art, Claes Oldenburg, dies at 93

Claes Oldenburg, a Swedish-born artist whose lighthearted caricatures of daily things like monumental renderings of lipstick and binoculars as well as “soft sculptures” of hamburgers and ice cream cones — made him a leading force in pop art, passed away on July 18 at his home in Manhattan. He was 93.

Claes Oldenburg died at the ripe old age of 93. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 28 January 1929.  He was the son of Gosta Oldenburg (father) and Sigrid Elisabeth (mother).

His father; Gosta His father was a Swedish diplomat who was stationed in New York and in 1936 was appointed Consul General of Sweden to Chicago where Oldenburg grew up.

Claes Oldenburg was best recognized for his public art installations featuring big replicas and statutes of everyday objects. Another theme in his work was soft sculpture versions of everyday objects. Many of his works were made in collaboration with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, who passed in 2009.

Finally, Claes married his second wife; Coosje van Bruggen in 1977. Later Coosje died on January 10, 2009, from the effects of breast cancer.
