There were two young women prison workers Elyse Hibbs and Ruth Shmylo have been accused of having a romantic relationship with a Romeo inmate behind bars, a court heard. Nurse Elyse Hibbs and custody officer Ruth Shmylo, both 25, face misconduct charges over the alleged ‘inappropriate relationships’ while working in the jail.
What Did Elyse Hibbs Do?
The two women who have been allegedly involved with the same inmate at the category B Parc Prison in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales – although he has not been named in the court charges.
Shmylo’s alleged five-month-long relationship is said to have taken place between December and April 2021 – before Hibbs’ allegedly followed her relationship with the man between May and July.
Hibbs who is a qualified nurse is accused of misconduct while working at two prisons – HMP Parc and HMP Manchester that goes by the name; Strange ways. The two women will appear at Cardiff Crown Court next month for a plea and trial preparation hearing after following their appearances at Cardiff Magistrates.
The charge against Hibbs states: ‘While acting as a public officer, namely prison nurse, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner.’
The charge has also against Shmylo says: ‘While acting as a public officer, namely a prison custody officer, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner.’ Neither woman has yet to get a plea to the common law charges. Hibbs, of New Bridge, Gwent, and Shmylo, of Pontypridd, will be appearing at Cardiff Crown Court on September 13.
