With the passing last week of longtime league commissioner, official, coach, and humanitarian Elgie Bellizio, the neighborhood lost an iconic character in Monterey County athletics as well as an even finer human being.

Over the course of his 32-year tenure as commissioner of the league that is now known as the Pacific Coast Athletic League, Bellizio was a regular at many high school sporting events.

He was my mentor,” said current league commissioner Tim McCarty, who replaced Bellizio in 2004. β€œI went to him whenever I had questions for the last 18 years. Until he passed, I still relied on his knowledge.”

Bellizio, 97, who is a member of the Salinas Valley Sports Hall of Fame, brought stability to the post and demanded sportsmanship and character from teachers, coaches, and administrators.

β€œHe was not afraid to tell you if you were out of line,” McCarthy said. β€œHe impacted so many people, not just as a coach or educator, but as a human being.”

Bellizio spent 36 years officiating high school and college football and basketball before taking on the role of league commissioner for what was then the Monterey Bay League and Mission Trail Athletic Leagues.

Before retiring in 1990, Bellizio spent 39 years teaching science and physical education at Salinas High and coached basketball, track and field, baseball, and wrestling.

In addition, he established the Sunrise House in 1970 and oversaw the district’s alcohol and drug prevention program until his retirement.
