When she couldn’t go any further owing to tiredness, one of the girls she’d shared Mengele’s bread with recognized her and helped her along with Magda. In Gunskirchen, conditions were so poor that Eger had to eat grass to survive, while other prisoners succumbed to cannibalism.
According to Eger, when the US soldiers liberated the camp in May 1945, she was left for dead amidst a lot of dead bodies. After witnessing her hand move, a soldier is alleged to have rescued her. The soldier sought medical assistance immediately and saved her life. She weighed 32 kg and had a fractured back, typhoid fever, pneumonia, and pleurisy at the time.
