At various times during his honorable career, Owens managed marketing and public relations for Wayland Baptist University, Covenant Health Systems, United Supermarkets, and St. Mary’s of the Plains Hospital. In 1976, he started his illustrious writing career as a sports journalist for the Plainview Reporter-News.

He had a bachelor’s degree in political science and speaking from Wayland Baptist. In 2009, Owens received the Distinguished Service Alumni Award from the university. From Texas Tech, Owens also received a master’s degree in mass communication. In 2011, Owens was recognized as one of Tech’s Outstanding Alumni by the College of Media & Communication.

Over the years, Owens served on the boards of numerous humanitarian organizations, including the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, South Plains Kidney Foundation, Hospice of Lubbock, Lubbock Area United Way, and the Lubbock branch of the American Red Cross.

His wife Lynn, daughter Kami Bedford, son-in-law Brandon Bedford, granddaughter Scarlett Kate Bedford, as well as other family members, are left to carry on without him.

On Monday, September 26, 2022, memorial services will get underway at 10 a.m. at Lubbock’s First United Methodist Church. The family requests that donations be given in Owens’ honor to Morris Safe House, Lubbock Area United Way, and Hospice of Lubbock. Owens was 69 years old.
