‘Inspiring and bright’ pilot from Suffolk, age 21, passed away as a result of an infected insect sting

A Suffolk coroner who heard the story of the “inspiring and brilliant” Bury St. Edmunds woman who passed away from an infected bug sting said he had “never encountered a case like this before.” Oriana Pepper, a 21-year-old aspiring commercial pilot, was in Belgium for additional training when a sting above her right eye became infected with the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. She passed away on July 12 of last year at a hospital in Antwerp after the illness spread to her carotid arteries and brain. At the inquest at Suffolk Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, senior Suffolk coroner Nigel Parsley noted the highly unusual nature of the case.

The skilled pianist complained of a “dull ache” in her back on July 5 along with tenderness in her eyebrow and a red mark where she had been bitten. She was given antibiotics after visiting an A&E department at a hospital in Antwerp, but in the days that followed, her face swollen and she appeared “dazed and exhausted” before passing out in the shower. Oriana was given immunotherapy because doctors thought she had an autoimmune disorder that was targeting her brain stem, but she never recovered and eventually lapsed into a coma.
