Mr Pegg’s death was announced by the member for Stretton’s electoral office on Thursday morning via a Facebook post outlining the community’s sadness at the demise of the much regarded 40-year-old.
“Our community will remember Duncan as a relentless warrior for our town,” his old office wrote in a Facebook post. “Others will recall him as a zealous legal champion for wounded employees. His family will remember him as a cherished son and brother.
“In his dying months, Duncan expressed his deep gratitude to the Stretton community for their confidence in him in three successive elections. He frequently stated that our local community provided him with the most support in his work as an MP. His biggest hope was for you to think the same way about him.”
Mr Pegg had only resigned from his job in April, following an emotional statement to the Queensland legislature detailing his 18-month struggle with illness.

“Up until this point I’ve been able to effectively represent my local area while fighting against cancer. According to my most recent medical advise, I will no longer be able to fight cancer while still fighting for my community in the way that my community deserves.” Mr. Pegg said.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk issued a statement shortly after Mr Pegg’s death, expressing “great regret at the loss of my friend” and praising Mr Pegg for beating illness with “great bravery and grace.”

“He showed politics could be a force for good. It was an honour to call him my friend.”
In his farewell message to his colleagues in April, Mr Pegg encouraged MPs to consider the perspectives of terminally ill patients while voting on voluntarily assisted dying legislation, which is set to be debated in the House later this year.
“I speak as someone who has been fighting cancer for 18 months, who regularly attends a cancer centre and speaks to cancer patients with a terminal illness,” he said.

“Let’s be very clear, people with terminal illnesses don’t want to die, they want to live – they fight to live every day. I personally fight to live every day.
“However, if you are diagnosed with terminal cancer, you will die. People with fatal conditions will not have a choice. I will not advise members how to vote (with) their conscience, but before making a choice, I urge every MP to talk with – and listen to – persons with terminal illnesses and their families.”
