On November 24th, 1983, Don Tidey was driving his 13-year-old daughter Susan to school when he came to a halt outside his Dublin home at what appeared to be a Garda roadblock. Near the crossroads of Stocking Lane and Woodstown Way in Rathfarnham, two automobiles were parked on the side of the road. One of the cars has a blue flashing light installed on the roof.

A man dressed in what seemed to be a Garda uniform stopped Mr. Tidey. Mr. Tidey was threatened with a firearm by the man. A third man dashed over to Alistair Tidey, Mr. Tidey’s son, who was driving the car behind them, and helped Susan Tidey out of her father’s car.

Susan and Alistair Tidey were both forced to pull over to the side of the road. Mr. Tidey was beaten with a weapon in the head after being put face down in the back of one of the kidnappers’ cars. One of his ribs was cracked by someone sitting on it. Mr. Tidey recovered after 23 days.
