Dillon Quirke was an Irish Hurler. He played for Tipperary Senior Championship club Clonoulty-Rossmore and at the inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team.

Senior Hurler Dillon Quirke dies at a young age

Quirke passed away on August 5, 2022, while competing for his club in a Tipperary SHC match versus Kilruane MacDonaghs at Semple Stadium. After he was brought to Tipperary University Hospital, the game was called off. The Tipperary GAA rescheduled the weekend’s games out of respect.

With Clonoulty-Rossmore, Quirke started his club career at the juvenile and underage levels. With the club’s minor squad, he won back-to-back divisional championships in 2014 and 2015. Later, after defeating Thurles Sarsfields in the championship game, he won the Tipperary U21AHC championship. When Clonoulty-Rossmore defeated Nenagh Éire g in the 2018 Tipperary SHC final, Quirke contributed two points from play.

In preparation for the 2015 Munster MHC, Quirke established a two-year relationship with the Tipperary minor hurling team. He was not used as a substitute in either the All-Ireland final loss to Galway or the Munster final victory over Limerick. After defeating Limerick by 17 points in the Munster final, Quirke, who was once again eligible for the minor grade, earned his second consecutive Munster MHC medal while sitting on the bench.  He later defeated Limerick 1-21 to 0-17 and received an All-Ireland medal on the field for his efforts.

Quirke was recalled to the Tipperary under-21 hurling team for the 2018 Munster U21HC after a year away from the inter-county stage. He lined up at left wing-back as Tipperary lost to Cork 2-23 to 1-13 in the Munster final, and he was in the same spot as Tipperary defeated Cork in the ensuing All-Ireland final. In November 2018, Quirke was one of 12 under-21 players selected for the senior team’s preseason training panel.

He was later released from the panel, though. Later, he was brought back up to the senior team, where he made his debut in Limerick’s round one 2020 National League defeat of 2-14 to 0-18. Later that year, Quirke made his championship debut against Cork in an All-Ireland qualifier when he replaced Jason Forde in the 73rd minute. He began all four of Tipperary’s disappointing Munster Championship games in 2022 and was a frequent starter for the starting fifteen.
