This shifted away from DNA evidence and toward establishing a ‘rat trap.’
Hidden cameras, lookout points, and an infrared camera-carrying helicopter were all used in one of Grant’s favorite haunts.
Following many attempted break-ins, more than 75 cops joined the covert burglary squad.

DCI Sutton’s strategy worked. After attempting to enter an elderly woman’s home on November 14, 2009, an officer noticed Grant coming back to his car.
With a crowbar in the boot and a woolen cap in the glove box, he was apprehended.

DS Morgan stated that the exact number of offenses is unknown because “his victims came from an age that is prone to see the good in everyone.”
“When he r*ped her, one commended him for being kind.” Another stated she didn’t want to call 999 because “I know the cops are already overworked,” he explained.

Grant was a skilled thief who has broken into the homes of over 90 elderly women ranging in age from 68 to 93 years old. He was found to be responsible for four r*pes and around 30 other s*xual assaults. He is also suspected of being responsible for at least two more r*pes in which the victims felt unable to file a formal complaint. Because his victims were frequently too traumatized to talk to the police, the true figure may be greater. Furthermore, the Operation Minstead investigating team had to determine which incidents were clearly the work of the same perpetrator and which were similar but maybe unconnected.
As a result, several possible Minstead instances reported to the Operation Minstead team by police could not be definitively established as the activity of the same perpetrator and thus had to be omitted from the connected series. The confirmed string of offenses began in Croydon’s Shirley neighborhood in October 1992. Operation Minstead was not established until 1998, after a four-year gap between the initial attack and a series of others.

Despite committing numerous crimes, Grant went unnoticed for lengthy periods of time. No further offenses were documented after the first attack in October 1992 until 1997. There was another extended gap after a particularly severe r*pe on August 5, 1999, in which his victim was nearly killed by her injuries. This sparked suspicion in the media that the rapist had been imprisoned or died for an unrelated crime. He struck again on October 13, 2002, ten years after the first incident. In the summer of 2003, there were seven verified attacks. After that, there was another pause.
The second wave of confirmed attacks occurred near the end of 2008 and into early 2009.
