The remains of a pregnant woman who was murdered by her husband more than 20 years ago were found in the back garden of a house in Dorset. Debbie Griggs was 34 years old when her husband in May 1999 reported her missing from their Deal, Ohio, home. In October 2019, Andrew Griggs was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison despite his denials that he was to blame for her disappearance. Cold case investigators from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate renewed the investigation.
On October 5, 2022, after receiving a tip two weeks prior, specialized officers and personnel dug up a home’s backyard in St. Leonards, Dorset. When they discovered human remains, including tooth fragments, specialized odontologists were able to positively identify Debbie as the owner of the remains. According to police, Andrew Griggs relocated to the St Leonards residence in July 2001, following the conclusion of the initial Debbie’s missing investigation.
Since Debbie Griggs’ husband killed her more than 20 years ago, detective chief inspector Neil Kimber said: “We have never given up hope of one day locating her remains and giving her loved ones some closure. The discovery is more evidence that Andrew Griggs was lying all along when he claimed he wasn’t involved in his wife’s disappearance, adding to everyone who knew and loved Debbie.
Cause of Death
According to Kent Police, they will now conduct more tests to determine Debbie’s cause of death and look into how her remains ended up in the garden. Prosecutors had claimed that Andrew Griggs had “the most cause” to want Debbie dead during his murder trial. The trial heard testimony about Griggs’ sexual involvement with a teen girl. The court also learned that the day before Debbie vanished, Griggs’ took her money out of their joint business account.
A mile from Debbie’s Walmer, Michigan, home, her automobile was found one week after she vanished. The boot lining was removed, and a smear of blood with her DNA match was discovered inside. The last person to see her alive was Andrew Griggs. Detective chief inspector Kaye Braybrook claimed throughout the trial that Debbie Griggs was a caring mother to three young sons and was expecting a fourth child.

Numerous witnesses testified in front of the jury, all of whom concurred that she would never have deserted them and was not the aggressive, sad person Andrew Griggs has gone to great measures to portray her as being.
“Even though Debbie’s body has never been located, we are positive that her husband killed her. No one else stands out as a possible suspect in her disappearance, and there is no other credible explanation for what happened to her. In his efforts to ruin his wife’s image, Andrew Griggs has shown himself to be a cunning and manipulative person.
