British Conservative MP Sir David Amess stabbed to death in ‘terrorist incident’

Sir David Amess, 69, a member of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party, was stabbed multiple times in the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, east of London, around lunchtime.

In what police described as a terrorist act, British legislator Sir David Amess was stabbed to death in an Essex church on Friday by an assailant who lunged at him as he greeted voters.

Amess, 69, a member of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party, was stabbed multiple times in the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, east of London, about midday.

The Metropolitan Police, whose counter-terrorism branch is handling the investigation, branded the fatal stabbing of a terrorist event in a statement released early Saturday.

According to the police, the preliminary inquiry found a “possible motivation tied to Islamist extremism.”

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene, and detectives said the first investigation was being led by specialized counter-terrorism investigators.

“Officers are currently conducting searches at two residences in the London region as part of the inquiry,” the police stated, adding that the suspect in custody is thought to have acted alone.

The attack was dubbed an “assault on democracy” by politicians.

“We have lost today a brilliant public servant and a much-valued friend and colleague in David,” said Johnson, who flew back to London from the west of England when the news broke.

Armed cops stormed the church, as paramedics tried in vain to save the lawmaker’s life on the church’s floor, where a sign reads, “All are welcome here: where old friends meet and strangers feel at home.”

Essex Police Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington told reporters, “Tragically, he died at the spot.” He stated that authorities did not believe there was any immediate threat to anyone else at the time of the event.

He revealed no more specifics about the assassination, which is the second fatal attack on a British MP in their constituency in the last five years, raising concerns about politicians’ safety.

The apprehended individual is believed to be a British national with Somali ancestry, according to Sky News.

David Amess Career

At the 1979 general election, he ran for the safe Labour Party seat of Newham North West, which was won by Labour’s Arthur Lewis. Amess was elected to the London Borough of Redbridge as a councilor in 1982.

In the 1983 general election, the incumbent Conservative MP for Basildon, Harvey Proctor, transferred to Billericay; Amess was chosen to succeed him and was elected Member of Parliament for Basildon on June 9, 1983. He typified a new generation of Essex men who backed Margaret Thatcher wholeheartedly. “Representative of modern Essex guy, working-class, father electrician, right-wing, keen hanger, noisy exuberant, no subtlety,” according to the campaign.

Amess remained an MP and a local councilor until 1986 when he stepped down from the Redbridge Borough Council to focus on his Westminster seat. In the 1987 general election, he narrowly retained his Basildon seat, thanks in part to a sizable personal following. Following the election, Amess was appointed as Michael Portillo’s Parliamentary Private Secretary, a role he retained for 10 years during Portillo’s cabinet career.

At the 1992 general election, Amess retained his seat, which was the first sign that the Conservatives would win the election unexpectedly; the Basildon constituency was seen as a make-or-break election.

Boundary Commission “r*ped the town of Basildon” by introducing an extra seat

A boundary review took place prior to the 1997 general election, dividing the Basildon seat into two pieces, which were then combined with two neighboring districts. Amess said at the time that the Boundary Commission “ra*ped the town of Basildon” by introducing an extra seat. The new Basildon constituency was almost probably going to be won by Labour, given his narrow majority.

As a result, Amess opted to run for re-election elsewhere. Following the retirement of former Cabinet member Paul Channon, Amess was appointed to Southend West in June 1995. As a result, in 1997, he was returned to Westminster. In 1997, Labour’s Angela Evans Smith won the newly drawn Basildon seat by almost 13,000 votes.

Where he attended his High school and University? What was his major?

On Boleyn Road in Forest Gate, Amess attended St Anthony’s Junior and Infant School, then St Bonaventure’s Grammar School (now St Bonaventure’s Catholic School). His political views, he remarked later in life, arose from his time at St Bonaventure’s. He had a speech problem as a child, and speech therapy to remedy it caused him to lose his natural Cockney accent.
