She received her diagnosis of incurable bowel cancer in 2016 and after having numerous treatments, she stated that her cancer is incurable up until June 2021 because the medications she was relying on were no longer working. Her condition was updated on social media in May 2022 by James, who wrote that she was receiving hospice care at home and that “her body just couldn’t go longer.” Over £3 million was raised for her campaign, the Bowelbabe Fund, in less than 48 hours after she posted it.

Deborah James only brought bowel cancer to awareness, but the money she raised would support research and life-saving treatments. In May 2022, James rose to fame after establishing a cancer fund that raised £1.5 million in just one day. She manages to raise nearly £7 million to the time of her death.
