According to the Porterville Fire Department, a jet crashed at the end of the Porterville Municipal Airport airfield on Monday about 2:30 p.m. The pilot died, and the jet crashed shortly after takeoff.

He is survived by his wife Diane, his friends, and his family.

The plane was totally engulfed when first responders arrived, and the pilot’s identity was not identified. The fires were put out by Porterville firefighters. However, the pilot, identified as 144th Fighter Wing Lt. Col. Billy Sullivan, was pronounced dead at the site. They also stated that the airport will be closed for at least 12 hours, but it could be longer.

Sullivan’s body was retrieved from the collision site on Tuesday morning, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators had arrived on the scene to begin their investigation.

The airport has reopened as well.

“After speaking with the airport manager this morning, he stated he felt comfortable opening up the airport because of the aircraft’s proximity to the end of the runway,” says Porterville Fire Department Chief Bryan Cogburn.
