Marshall joined Everton, his boyhood club, in 1973 after being signed by manager Billy Bingham. He turned down interest from Liverpool and Manchester United to join the club, later commenting, “I could have gone to Liverpool or Manchester United, but I was always going to choose Everton”.

In the 1974–75 season, he advanced to the first-team squad, making his debut for the Toffees on January 11, 1975, after coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 win over Leicester City in the First Division. Marshall earned his first start for the club the following week, against Birmingham City, in another 3–0 win. For the balance of the season, he was given one more league start and one FA Cup appearance.

Marshall was “signed in England early last week by [Miami] Toro’s general manager John Young,” according to The Miami News on May 17, 1976. The Miami Toros were a team in the Eastern Division of the North American Soccer League that had only existed since 1972. Marshall made his debut against the Chicago Sting on 14 May, and two days later scored his first goal for the club in a 1–0 win over the Seattle Sounders; The Miami News lauded his “speed and grit,” which had “transformed the face of Miami’s assault”.
