Chief Eric Winstrom confirmed Monday that Christopher Schurr is the Grand Rapids police officer seen in the video shooting motorist Patrick Lyoya to death after a traffic encounter on April 4th.
The officer who fired the fatal shot has been identified by Grand Rapids Police.
Christopher Schurr, the officer who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya earlier this month, was recognized by the chief of police in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Monday.
Lyoya was shot after Schurr pulled him over for an apparently unregistered license plate on April 4.
Even though the officer’s name was circulating publicly, Police Chief Eric Winstrom refused to divulge Schurr’s name, stating that the city has a long-standing policy of not releasing the identities of workers under investigation. “In the interest of transparency, to decrease ongoing conjecture, and to avoid any additional confusion,” Winstrom said he chose to name Schurr.
The identity of Schurr was revealed three days after the Rev. Al Sharpton requested the officer’s name during a speech at Lyoya’s burial.
“How dare you hold the name of a man who killed this man?” Sharpton said Friday at a crowded Renaissance Church of God in Christ in Grand Rapids. “Every time a young Black man or woman is arrested in this town, you put their name all over the news. Every time we’re suspected of something, you put our name out there.”
