After being seriously wounded during a shooting on Monday night in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, a Miami-Dade police officer has passed away.

After the incident, Detective Cesar Echaverry, 29, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. Wednesday saw his passing.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry. Surrounded by loved ones, Echy succumbed to his injuries after a brief battle for his life,” said Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez III, Miami-Dade Police Director & Chief of Safety and Emergency Response.

According to an investigation, the sequence of incidents that started with the robbery eventually led to the shooting.

According to the police, the suspect, 32-year-old Jeremy Horton, fled the scene in a car before colliding head-on with another vehicle that was transporting a toddler and an adult. Both the adult and the child were unharmed.

The crash was followed, according to the police, by a gunfight. Horton expired there and then.
