Swanigan went to Homestead High School and had the same locker number as Barnes, 44.

He was selected Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior and led Homestead to its first-ever state championship. In his class, he was rated as a top-20 national potential. Hammons, allowing Swanigan to play the 4 holes was the key reason Swanigan chose Purdue.

On May 19, he elected to stay in-state and chose Purdue. Swanigan announced his decision on Twitter with the hashtag “#BoilerUp.” Swanigan was Purdue’s first Mr. Basketball recruit since Glenn Robinson in 1991, and he was the Hoosiers’ first McDonald’s All-American since 1996.
