Purdue University tweeted, “The world lost a gentle spirit last night.” Swanigan was a standout for Purdue in 2016-17, earning Big Ten Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten honors. The Portland Trail Blazers selected him 26th in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, and he played three seasons in the league.

Swanigan told ESPN in 2017 that as a child, he lived in five different homeless shelters and attended 13 different schools. He was adopted by AAU coach Roosevelt Barnes in eighth grade, and he trained him through high school at Homestead High in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was named Indiana Mr. Basketball, won a state championship, and was a McDonald’s All-American while there. Swanigan had broken the school’s single-season records for rebounds and double-doubles by the time he left Purdue after his sophomore season.

In 2020, he was chosen to the Big Ten Network’s All-Decade Basketball Team. Swanigan died of natural causes, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office, which verified the death to Fort Wayne, Indiana, local TV affiliate WANE 15.

Barnes responded, “Perhaps if I intended to nurture the next hot-dog-eating champion, the next Joey Chestnut, folks might have a real problem.” Swanigan had not consulted Barnes before committing to Michigan State, and some feel that because Barnes played sports at Purdue, he had a significant influence on Swanigan’s decision to de-commit from Michigan State. Barnes stated that this was not the reason Swanigan switched and that the availability of two centers taller than 7′, Isaac Haas and A.J. Hammons, allowing Swanigan to play the 4 holes was the key reason Swanigan chose Purdue.

On May 19, he elected to stay in-state and chose Purdue. Swanigan announced his decision on Twitter with the hashtag “#BoilerUp.” Swanigan was Purdue’s first Mr. Basketball recruit since Glenn Robinson in 1991, and he was the Hoosiers’ first McDonald’s All-American since 1996.
