Since the 1960s, he led the Thompson Trio. Throughout the 1970s, Thompson’s records acquired success in Europe. He traveled the continent frequently in the 1970s and 1980s, both as a solo performer and as a band leader or member. He wrote for jazz journals and created a radio show, Jazz Originals, for KBEM-FM in Minneapolis.
