Former West Indies and Northern Districts hitter Bruce Pairaudeau passed away at the age of 91.

Together with Frank Worrell, Everton Weekes, and Alf Valentine, Pairaudeau, who was born in British Guiana in 1931, played 13 Test matches for the West Indies between 1953 and 1957. During a 1956 visit, he fell in love with New Zealand. Before quitting domestic cricket in 1966–1967, he led Northern Districts to their first Plunket Shield championship after immigrating to New Zealand.

Pairaudeau made his Guiana debut at the age of 15 in 1947, and the following year he collected his first 100 runs. Then, in 1953, he defeated India in Port of Spain in his first Test match, scoring a century. However, in his following 20 innings, he only reached double figures six times. In total, he scored 454 runs at an average of 21.61 over 13 Test matches.

In order to see the visiting West Indies team train in 2015, Pairaudeau and his companion drove from Hamilton to Napier.

“We heard a West Indian voice and when I looked at who it was, I thought it might be Bruce Pairaudeau. We knew he lived in New Zealand but we didn’t know he was coming over,” Philip Spooner, West Indies’ media manager, told ESPNcricinfo at the time “All the guys just loved meeting him.”

Pairaudeau is survived by his son Jeffrey and three grandchildren.

Bruce Pairaudeau Career, What was his Profession?

Between 1953 and 1957, West Indian cricketer Bruce Hamilton Pairaudeau participated in 13 Test matches. He left British Guiana in the late 1950s and eventually settled in New Zealand.

Bespectacled right-handed batsman Bruce Pairaudeau was frequently deployed as an opener but his career never quite lived up to its early promise. Before turning 16, he was selected for British Guiana’s inaugural first-class match, and at the age of 16 years and 5 months, he struck a century in that match. First-class cricket prospects were scarce in West Indian cricket at the time, so Pairaudeau moved to England in 1950 to play for Burnley in the Lancashire League.

He returned to British Guiana in the latter half of 1952 and performed well enough in two first-class games to earn a spot in the squad for the First Test match against India in January 1953. Pairaudeau, batting at position number six, amassed 115 points and 219 runs with Everton Weekes for the fifth wicket. He was given the opportunity to start the innings for the series’ final four Test matches, and while only scoring more than 50 runs once, he still finished with 257 runs at an average of more than 32.
