The BYU head coach position was first offered to Kyle Whittingham, a former Cougar linebacker and then-defensive coordinator at the University of Utah, which prompted Mendenhall to contact UNLV head coach Mike Sanford about the defensive coordinator opening on his staff.
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 6–6 record in 2005, his first year at the helm. They concluded the season ranked 14th in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls, BYU’s highest national poll performance since 1996. In 2008, BYU finished 10–3 overall and 6–2 in the Mountain West Conference to complete three straight 10-win seasons and become the first Cougar team to go unbeaten at home for three consecutive seasons.
