In 1996, Gassaway made his debut in the sport by competing in a one-night competition in Mississippi. He won both of his first two fights by rear choke in under 100 seconds. Later that night, he was submitted by Anthony Macias, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter. In his illustrious MMA career, “Mandingo” toured the globe, first to Japan to compete in Pancrase and then to Brazil later that year to compete in an International Vale Tudo Championship competition.
Between 1998 and early 2000, the Chicago native went 14 fights without losing, defeating stars like Travis Fulton and future UFC fighter Joe Slick.
