Bramwell Tovey, a “beloved maestro,” died at age 69.

The Winnipeg New Music Festival was started by Bramwell Tovey, a former music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra who passed away on Tuesday at his Barrington, Rhode Island, home.

The 69-year-old has served as music director of the Sarasota Orchestra since 2021, and the orchestra released the sad news of his passing.

The Sarasota Orchestra claims in their statement that Tovey was given the all-clear from cancer following surgery after receiving a rare kind of sarcoma diagnosis in 2019.

In January, cancer returned and he was unable to recover, the statement says.

At the age of 22, Tovey was hired as a staff conductor by the London Festival Ballet. He collaborated with Massine on a Parade performance, Hynd on The Nutcracker and Sanguine Fan, and Nureyev on Romeo and Juliet. He took up the role of music director for Scottish Ballet in 1978, directing works by Peter Darrell such as Cheri and Five Rückert Songs (with Janet Baker).

In September 2000, Tovey was appointed music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO). His original agreement was extended initially in December 2004 and then once again in January 2010 through 2015. The VSO announced in November 2013 that Tovey’s contract would be further extended through the 2017–18 season as well as the anticipated end of his tenure as the VSO’s music director at that time.

From 2002 until 2006, Tovey served as the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra’s musical director. During that period, he led the ensemble on tours to Europe, the Far East, and the eastern United States. In 2005, he oversaw the group’s performance of Penderecki’s 8th Symphony, which was given its world premiere.
