He performed in Sydney in 1957 with a tiny band fronted by guitarist Ray Price. Back in Melbourne, he continued to play as a semi-pro, occasionally recording with a band fronted by his brother, such as The Naked Dance. Barnard later joined Bell’s band after Bell called him in 1957 with a job offer in Sydney that did not materialize. This led to a tour of his native nation, as well as trips to New Zealand and Papua New Guinea with pop artist Frank Ifield.
Armstrong visited Australia in 1963, and Bell’s band received him at the airport, where Barnard had a brief encounter with his idol. Barnard founded his first band in 1971 for an EMI Records session, which resulted in 16 Jazz Greats, and he formed his second band three years later. Although his name was formed and his popularity spread due to his powerful playing in the conventional jazz style, this was far from the extent of his enormous talent. This appears to be reflected in his lyrical mainstream ballad playing, which pays homage to the guitarists he admires, such as Bobby Hackett, Braff, and, of course, Armstrong.
