Mr. Luján’s office did not say how long he would be absent, but given the Senate Democrats’ tenuous 50-50 majority, a long absence from a Democratic caucus member is likely to jeopardize, or at the very least delay, Democratic legislation or presidential appointments that reach the Senate floor without Republican support.
Several Democrats expressed relief that Mr. Luján would recover on Tuesday, but they refrained to comment on the political ramifications of Mr. Luján’s stroke, saying reporters that their primary worry was for his health and that they were still absorbing the news.
