Barry Johann Ronge, a famous and prolific South African film and art critic and writer, passed away at the age of 74 in Johannesburg. Ronge, who retired in 2014, passed away on Sunday, July 3, at home while being held by his life partner Albertus Van Dyk. He asked that his passing not be made public until a week had passed. The past 45 years have seen them as a pair.

Bridget Van Oerle, a spokesperson for The Buz Factor, told eNCA that Ronge passed away from old age and natural causes when he was with his life partner Albertus van Dyk and that he only wanted the news to be released one week after he passed away. The South African journalist worked as a reporter for M-(DStv Net’s 101) entertainment magazine programs including Front Row and reviewed movies for M-Revue Net’s Plus. Later, he fronted TV shows that were created with his role as a South African film critic in mind.

Barry Ronge established himself as South Africa’s most well-known and dreaded film critic on M-(DStv Net’s 101) Cinemagic with Barry Ronge and later SABC3’s Screenplay, where he would rate movies with alliterative numbers like a “Titanic 10” or a “Failing Four.”
