A North Carolina child who suffered second and third-degree burns after his science experiment went off at home is now recovering in the hospital.
According to ABC station WLOS and a GoFundMe page, Barrett McKim, 12, had over half of his body burned when an experiment involving isopropyl alcohol caught fire on June 23. According to the campaign, the explosion also injured Barrett’s mother, Caroline, who sprayed him with water until help arrived at their Highlands house.
Barrett was evacuated to a burn facility in Augusta, according to Schlautman, where he was going to need “several surgeries involving skin grafts.”
Barrett will have his fifth operation on Friday, according to an update released by Schlautman on Thursday. On the same day, Caroline was scheduled for a second procedure.
The skin grafting and cell regeneration procedure, in which they remove Barrett’s skin, mix it with a solution, and spray it back onto him, is expected to begin on Friday, according to Schlautman.
Kyle, Barrett’s father, informed WLOS that his son utilized a Bunsen burner, a device frequently found in laboratories, in his experiment. He told the news channel that alcohol had been included in the incident. “That somehow caught fire throughout that procedure and sort of blew back into his face. About 50% of his body is burned, and according to my understanding, 30% of those burns are second-degree burns and 20% are third-degree burns.”
He added: “Fortunately, he was wearing protective glasses, which certainly helped, but he was wearing a synthetic shirt, which ended up being a real contributor in the fire staying and trying to get that off as it kind of melted away with the accelerant on there.”
Kyle called his wife a “hero” for helping to save Barrett’s life following the explosion.
“Caroline, although she’s yet to believe it, is a hero,” he told WLOS, “and I think a lot of the reason Barrett is alive.”
