In February 2020, Arno revealed that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

“We’ll all miss him, but he’ll always be here thanks to the music that kept him going until the end,” his Belgian agent Filip De Groote said in a statement.

Arno, who was born on May 21, 1949, in the Flemish coastal town of Ostend, began his career in the 1980s with the ensemble TC Matic.

With songs like “Les Yeux de mon mere (My Mother’s Eyes),” he was able to attain a broader audience as a solo artist.

“He is an immense singer and poet, the Belgian national monument. And a monument of Europe,” said Boris Vedel, director of the Printemps de Bourges music festival.

Arno was received in the Royal Palace in Brussels in February, dressed in his typical black stage costume, by King Philippe, who described him as an “icon of the Belgian scene.”
