Anthea had let go of the yarn of a window blind too quickly when opening it, causing it to fly out of her grasp and strike her in the eye.

She felt a dull discomfort, yet there was no visible damage to her eye. So she ignored the boring discomfort as nothing to be concerned about. Turner later found out that her retina was pretty badly damaged and had to get immediate attention. She noticed a red, flashing strobe light in her left eye and hurried to consult an expert, where she learned about the retinal detachment and was rushed to surgery as quickly as possible.

Turner entered television through Sky Channel and Music Box, where she presented live music shows from July 1986 through 1989. Her first appearance on national television was with the BBC which led to her hosting two seasons of the Saturday morning show UP2U.

Turner sustained burns and temporary hearing loss during a failed motorbike stunt on UP2U, which led to a winning lawsuit against the BBC.

Turner hosted the children’s television show, Blue Peter, from 27 June 1992 until 29 June 1994, and was also involved in publicizing The Y Plan, a workout method established by the London YMCA. She went on to host Totally Live on the pan-European music channel Music Box, and then GMTV, which she hosted from July 1994 until December 1996.

Turner also co-hosted the first National Lottery draw on BBC One on November 19, 1994, alongside Noel Edmonds and Gordon Kennedy. She was the only host of National Lottery Live until April 20, 1996, when she joined ITV and the travel show Wish You Were Here…?, becoming the UK’s second-highest-paid female television presenter behind Cilla Black.
