Andy Cash appeared before a special sitting of Dublin’s District Court tonight charged with murdering his twin siblings Chelsea and Christy Cawley, eight, and older sister Lisa Cash, 18.

Lisa Cash, 18, and her eight-year-old twin brother and sister, Christy and Chelsea Cawley, perished in their family home on Rossfield Avenue, in the Brookfield area, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Andy Cash, also from Rossfield Avenue, was detained at Tallaght Garda station in Dublin.

On Monday evening, he was charged with the three murders and brought to appear before Judge Patricia McNamara at a special late sitting of Dublin District Court. He was then charged with three counts of murder. “His reply to the charges following caution was ‘no comment’ to each charge and he was issued a true copy of each charge sheet,” said Garda Whitty.

Mr. Cash did not address the court. The district court cannot grant bail in murder cases that need an application before the High Court. Garda Whitty urged the court to remand Mr. Cash in custody to appear via video connection at Cloverhill District Court on Friday. Judge McNamara issued that order and legal aid, noting the “very serious charges” and that there was no objection.

She also acceded to a request from defense solicitor Waheed Mudah to call for a psychological assessment of Mr. Cash in detention. However, when the barrister urged the court to determine that his client would be held in “solitary confinement” she indicated that was a matter for the prison governor.
