One of Quebec history’s most significant theatrical directors, André Brassard, passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 76. He had spent some time in the hospital.

The two altered the language of plays performed in Quebec, best recognized for performing the majority of playwright Michel Tremblay’s works. In 1968, “Les Belles Soeurs” became the first theatrical production to dramatize Quebec joual.

Françoise Durocher, Waitress, and Once Upon a Time in the East were both directed by Brassard. For his outstanding contribution to Quebec theater, he received the Denise Pelletier medal as well as a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

From 1983 until 1989, Brassard served as creative director of the French Theatre at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. He then served as creative director of the National Theatre School of Canada’s French division from 1991 to 2000.
