Alexis Morales, a missing mother who was driving a car with an Indiana license plate, was discovered dead in the South Bend area.

Alexis Morales was discovered dead on the west side of South Bend.

Morales was discovered dead along South Kaley Street in South Bend on Tuesday evening, according to the South Bend Police Department. Messiah Morales, a 5-month-old baby, was also taken to the hospital and is likely to recover from hypothermic injuries.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a scene with a heavy police presence was discovered near the intersection of South Kaley Street and West Huron Street, where a vehicle model and plate number match Alexis Morales’ vehicle described in the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office’s issued Silver Alert on Monday, a Silver BMW with the license plate “MULA LUV.”

On Monday, a Statewide Silver Alert was issued for Alexis Morales, 27, and her 5-month-old son Messiah Morales.

The two were last spotted in South Bend on April 12 at 6 p.m., leaving a meeting at Kelly Park. After a week of seeking by concerned family members, the couple was discovered around 10 minutes from Kelly Park.

“I have 4 jobs they were passing around the flyers and I made sure to tape ‘em and stick ‘em to the doors and stuff so if anybody knew any information, they could contact somebody,” said Emily Lynn, a neighbor. Morales’ death and previous disappearance are being investigated by the South Bend Police Department and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

“They obviously started with a Silver Alert and then you know we have their vehicle so we’re working conjointly with them to figure out what exactly happened,” said Russell Lupica, a sergeant for SBPD.

People in the region claim to have seen the car as early as last Thursday but were unaware of its significance.
