Former local BBC radio host and YouTuber Alex Belfield was convicted guilty of stalking four persons, including broadcaster Jeremy Vine.
At Nottingham Crown Court, the former radio host Alex Belfield, who previously worked for BBC Radio Leeds, was found guilty of all four stalking charges.
During a trial, it was shown that the former radio host, who hosted on BBC Radio Leeds, was repeatedly seen posting or sending abusive messages, videos, and emails. He was dubbed “the Jimmy Savile of trolling” during the proceeding. Belfield was found guilty of “simple stalking” in respect to Channel 5 and BBC Radio 2 presenter Mr. Vine and theater blogger Philip Dehaney after jurors at Nottingham Crown Court agreed that he caused substantial anxiety or distress to two victims.
Additionally, Mr. Vine testified against Belfield, telling the jury: “This troll is not your typical one. The Jimmy Savile of trolling is this.” Mr. Vine compared seeing Belfield’s video output to swimming in filth and claimed that it hurt like I had a fish hook stuck in my face and that the only way to stop the suffering was to remain still.
After 14 hours and 27 minutes of deliberation, the jury found the YouTube host guilty. In recent years, the host launched a station called Celebrity Radio. Additionally, the 42-year-old was found guilty of stalking Ben Hewis, a videographer, and presenter Bernie Keith of BBC Radio Northampton. Belfield testified before the court that after expressing his right to free expression in his correspondence with the complainants, he was the target of a social media “pile-on” and a “witch hunt” by other broadcasters.
The court was told that when false and totally unsubstantiated accusations regarding the alleged stealing of $1,000 were made, the broadcaster suffered a wave of hostility online.
Prosecutor John McGuinness QC stated when introducing the Crown’s evidence last month that Vine was subject to a “continuous onslaught” of offensive tweets and YouTube videos in 2020. The presenter, the court heard, experienced a surge of hatred online when erroneous and completely unfounded charges regarding the alleged theft of $1,000 were made.
After the BBC gave the money to a memorial fund established to honor a friend of the broadcaster, Belfield allegedly acquired a “dislike, perhaps loathing” of Mr. Vine. Mr. Vine testified, saying: “It alarmed and distressed me, and it gave me anxiety. In the past, I’ve experienced a real stalker that followed me about.” When compared to this guy, that is a picnic.
You get hit by it like an avalanche of hatred.” The BBC’s former head of the North, Rozina Breen, as well as former BBC Radio Leeds hosts Liz Green and Stephanie Hirst and former employee Helen Thomas’ accusation of stalking were all dismissed against Belfield. Mr. McGuinness stated before the jury: “Despite the fact that some people were in fact concerned about Mr. Belfield visiting their houses as a result of what Alex Belfield did, it is not implied that the defendant’s actions involved physical stalking.
The form of stalking that this case involves is different and more akin to online trolling. The alleged victims didn’t want Alex Belfield to get in touch with them, and they also didn’t want to see what he was saying about them or hear it. The prosecution claims that despite knowing or being aware that he was harassing them, he continued to harass them incessantly to the point where it seriously alarmed or distressed them and negatively damaged their everyday lives. He was given bail, and on September 16 he will be sentenced.
