Aiden was slain on the way to kindergarten with his mother on May 21. Between 7:55 and 8:15 a.m., someone in another car opened fire on the northbound 55 Freeway between the 22 Freeway and Chapman Avenue, striking the boy in the right rear passenger booster seat.

The boy was taken to Orange County Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials have released little details regarding the events that led to the suspects being apprehended on Sunday. However, they earlier stated that a man and a woman were driving a white Volkswagen, and that the male passenger is suspected of firing the shots that killed Aiden.

“While these arrests will not ease the pain of a mother’s loss, my hope is for the Leos family to have some peace of mind and to rest assured the CHP will work with the Orange County District Attorney to bring justice for Aiden,” CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said in a statement issued Sunday.

Each of the suspects was being jailed on a $1 million bail.

The suspect car was characterized as a white 2018 or 2019 Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen with non-tinted windows and a sunroof by the California Highway Patrol. Officials suspect the woman was behind the wheel, while the male passenger who fired the weapon sat in the front seat.

To discover the culprits, community groups and local government organizations contributed to a reward fund that amounted to at least $500,000.

Aiden was honored with a moving memorial service on Saturday afternoon.

“Your kindness, your prayers, your support and unbelievable generosity has helped provide me with so much strength, so I may stand on my own two feet today, in front of you, and share the beauty of who Aiden was and still is,” Cloonan said.

“The joy he brought into our lives was insurmountable,” she said. “My heart melted every time he laughed.”
