Aiden Aslin is a British-born dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Ukraine who was taken by Russian forces in April 2022 while fighting as a Ukrainian Marine in Mariupol.
He was condemned to death on 9 June by officials of the Russian-backed separatist unrecognized puppet state Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) for “mercenary operations and conducting measures aimed at gaining power and overturning the constitutional order of the DPR.” He was rescued from Russian captivity in a prisoner swap in September 2022.
Five Britons are among around 300 people released in a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine overnight.
Aiden Aslin, John Harding, and Shaun Pinner, three of them, were taken in April in eastern Ukraine by separatists with Russian support. Mr. Aslin and Mr. Pinner expressed their gratitude to everyone who had labored to rescue them in a personal message they taped on their journey home. Mr. Aslin declared, “We’re now out of the danger zone and headed home to our family. By a hair’s breadth, Mr. Pinner continued. “We want everyone to hear the wonderful news,” Mr. Aslin continued.
We appreciate the help from everyone. It is much appreciated. The majority of those freed are Ukrainian, with many hailing from the Azov regiment, which rose to fame for its tenacious defense of the city of Mariupol in the southeast. The tiny group of soldiers, which included John Harding, and a few civilians were imprisoned in the Azovstal steelworks for months with scant supplies of food, medication, ammunition, or electricity. In the end, they gave up in May.
The 10 foreigners that were freed in addition to the Britons also included Moroccan Brahim Saadoun, Americans Andy Huynh and Alexander Drueke, a Croatian, and a Swedish citizen. While many of the Ukrainians were returned to their own country, they were transported to Saudi Arabia. Turkey and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, assisted in arranging the prisoner exchange.
Nuclear Weapons
The fact that it happened as Mr. Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons to escalate the conflict appeared to come as a surprise to many. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, said: “We remember all of our people and work to save every Ukrainian.” This is what Ukraine stands for, what defines us as a people, and what sets us apart from our adversaries.
The release of five senior Ukrainian officers, including Lieutenant Colonel Denys Prokopenko, commander of the Azov battalion, his deputy Svyatoslav Palamar, and Serhiy Volynsky, commander of the 36th Marine Brigade, was the subject of the most challenging discussions, according to Mr. Zelensky. According to Mr. Zelenskyy, the three were the leaders of the resistance at Mariupol and will now stay in Turkey alongside the other two unnamed individuals until the war is over.
Viktor Medvedchuk, the head of a pro-Russian group that was outlawed and was charged with treason, was among the 55 Russians and pro-Moscow Ukrainians who were transported back as part of the agreement. Mr. Medvedchuk considers Mr. Putin to be a close friend; in fact, he so admires the Russian president that he named him the godfather of one of his kids.

Prior to enlisting in a “U.S.-backed militia leading the fight against ISIS in Syria” in 2015, Aiden Aslin resided in Newark, Nottinghamshire, and worked as a caregiver. Prior to the surrender of pro-government forces in Tel Abyad and al-Hasakah in 2015–2016, Aslin engaged in combat with the YPG International. Additionally, in 2015, he took part in the al-Hawl operation against the Islamic State. On February 3, 2016, he traveled back to the UK, where he was detained upon arrival.
When Nottinghamshire Police began looking into Aslin’s activities under the Terrorism Act, including his preparation for the battle against ISIS and his possession of “items for terrorist objectives in Iraq/Syria,” Aslin raised some eyebrows in the media. Charges were subsequently dropped, and in 2016 he went back to Syria. The lack of assistance from the international community for the YPG, the Turkish occupation of northern Syria, and the sale of British arms to Turkey for use in strikes against the Kurds were all criticized by him later. Aslin visited Ukraine in 2018 and joined the 36th Naval Infantry Brigade there. He was sent to Mariupol in February 2022. He submitted to Russian forces on April 12, 2022, who had been besieging the city since February 24, 2022.
On April 18, British ex-pat in Russia Graham Phillips conducted an interview with the man, who appeared to have suffered injuries while being held captive. Human rights attorney Geoffrey Robertson referred to the interview as a violation of the Geneva Conventions carried out for “propaganda reasons.” Robert Jenrick, a UK parliament member, subsequently expressed concerns about Aslin’s treatment. The Phillips and Aslin interview was taken off from YouTube in response to criticism. Since then, Aslin has conducted numerous interviews and launched a YouTube channel in his honor. Later, in August 2022, the channel was shut down “after a legal complaint.”
