Ahmad Price, a former Fern Creek High School basketball standout who received all-conference recognition while playing for Indiana University Southeast last season, passed away on Saturday.
He was 22. The cause of death is yet unknown.
“He was planning to go back to IUS, and he wanted to get into physical therapy,” said Juan Price, Ahmad’s father. “He wanted to continue to play ball after IUS, possibly overseas.”
Price, a 6-foot-3 guard, was named the River States Conference’s Newcomer of the Year and second-team all-league after averaging 16.7 points and 4.6 rebounds as a sophomore at IUS.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ahmad Price,” IUS Tweeted from its athletics account. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time. Ahmad was a wonderful person and tremendous teammate, and we are devastated by this loss.”
Price assisted Fern Creek in winning the Sixth Region championship for the first time ever in 2017 and repeated the feat in 2018. Before losing to Cooper in the Sweet 16 semifinals, the 2016–17 squad advanced. Price averaged 16.3 points and 6.1 rebounds as a senior in 2017–18, and The Courier-Journal recognized him honorable-mention All-State.
Prior to going to IUS, Price played two seasons at Lincoln Trail College in Illinois and one season each at Beckley Prep in West Virginia after graduating from Fern Creek.
