According to NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey, the victim was seated in the last car of a Manhattan-bound “Q” line train on Sunday afternoon. Daniel Enriquez, 48, of Brooklyn, was later identified by the NYPD.
At 11:42 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person shot at the Canal Street station in Lower Manhattan, where they discovered Enriquez with a gunshot wound to his torso. According to Corey, first responders assisted him and took him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
As claimed by the law enforcement officer, Enriquez was shot in the chest while the train car was going on the Manhattan Bridge from the last stop in Brooklyn to Canal Street.
According to the official, NYPD cops patrolled the “Q” train three times before the incident on Sunday.
The shooter, who fled the train when it arrived at Canal St. station, is still on the loose, and no arrests have been made. The suspect was described as a “dark-skinned male with a beard” who was last seen wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and white sneakers, according to Corey.
Corey claimed that while there were other people in the train compartment, Enriquez was the only one that was hurt.
Although investigators are reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses, Corey has requested members of the public to phone the NYPD with any relevant information.
According to a law enforcement person familiar with the investigation, the gunman and the victim had no interaction on the train before to the killing, and there appeared to be no quarrel.
The gunman raced out of the subway car and out of the station as the doors opened at Canal Street, according to the official.
