A football player from Las Cruces passes away after suffering an injury earlier this year

Abraham Romero aka Abe Romero, a football player for Organ Mountain High School who had been in a medically induced coma since suffering an accident late last month, has passed away.

Romero, 17, passed away on Saturday night at a hospital in El Paso, according to a Sunday post from the booster club of the Las Cruces school. Since he collapsed at a Knights away game in Deming on August 26, he has been receiving medical attention.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Abraham Romero passed gently on Saturday, September 17 with his mother at his side,” Sunday’s post began.

It continued: “Seventeen years is not nearly long enough, but it’s all he was given and It is very easy to focus on what we lost, but the true measure of life is in the impact it makes on our world, not on the time he was with us.”

The senior football player had been injured early in the game while playing running back, but it took around 20 minutes for him to pass out in between plays, according to Knights coach Steve Castille.

On September 10, Romero’s condition deteriorated.

The team captain’s struggle came to an end on Saturday, bringing Las Cruces’ support for Romero, his family (particularly his mother, Elizabeth Alonzo), and the Organ Mountain program to a heartbreaking ending.

The Organ Mountain squad had already started donning a decal with Romero’s initials and number (22), in memory of their lost teammate.

A candlelight vigil was held on Sunday evening at the Organ Mountain football field.
