Yumi Nu, 25, has pushed for acceptance as a second-generation Asian-American who represents plus-size women in a culture that hasn’t done much to promote size inclusivity. She’s now at the top of her career, having landed one of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s 2022 cover slots. Her trip, however, is far from over.

Nu recalls early dialogues and cultural allusions that contributed to her developing a negative attitude toward her body as a Japanese American woman. Nu’s grandmother, who lived in Japan in her 20s and reared Nu’s mother within a specific cultural context, internalized it as a form of “generational trauma.”

“My mom is a therapist, so she does so much self-work and understands how cultural and generational trauma affects you and affects your children,” Nu tells Yahoo Life. “Even people in my mom’s generation can understand the body shame and some of the cultural dynamics that I think cage a lot of women and shame a lot of women into thinking that they’re not good enough, or that they have to be perfect.”

It’s a manifestation of the deep-seated fatphobia that Nu sees across society and culture, but it has impacted her differently as she grew up in a mostly white part of Maryland. She recalls having difficulty accepting her diverse identity and embracing her various cultures.

Nu had to think for a while before realizing that everything was connected.

“I’ve shoved down this part of my identity and being Asian for the longest time because it wasn’t really popular to be anything that wasn’t white until a few years ago. And I think so many people of color are going through that process of like, ‘OK, now the media is accepting us,’ which plays a huge role in how we feel about ourselves and in a messed up way, it’s given a lot of people permission to finally feel proud where they came from,” Nu says. “But when I started thinking about that and processing it and going to therapy and talking about cultural and generational trauma and how that affects my behavior and my problems that reoccur on a day to day and the way I feel about my body, a lot was clicking.”

These major ideas, and Nu’s willingness to investigate them, occurred during a trip to Hawaii in 2015, during which she was “fed up” with the limitations she had imposed on herself as a result of society’s beauty standards. She remembers wanting to jump in the ocean but being afraid of being embarrassed if she didn’t do so in a T-shirt.

“Do you know how tiring it is to hate yourself for so long and not wear what you want? Like, ‘When I’m a size 10, when I’m 50 pounds lighter, I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna buy this.’ But what if it never comes and then I’m like 80 and I can’t do anything?” she says. “Then I was like, ‘I’m gonna start living my best life.'”

Nu acknowledges the relief she had when she first started following women on social media who were on body-positive journeys and says she’s grateful for her mother’s influence when it comes to doing self work and identifying the things that were holding her back. Hunter McGrady, a fellow SI Swim model, was one of the first.
