TERRE HAUTE, INDUSTRIAL REPUBLICAN REPUBLICAN REPUBLICAN REPUBLICAN Tunch Ilkin, a two-time NFL Pro Bowl pick and former Indiana State offensive lineman, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 63 after a battle with ALS.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
“We received the news of Tunch Ilkin’s departure this morning with heavy hearts following his struggle with ALS,” stated ISU Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales. “During this terrible time, our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to his family, friends, and former teammates.”
Curt Mallory, the head football coach at ISU, had the following to say: “Tunch Ilkin, the iconic Sycamore Hall of Famer, died away tonight in Terre Haute. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing him adored him. At Indiana State, he will be remembered for the rest of his life. Tunch, may you rest in peace.”

Ilkin was a member of the Indiana State football team from 1975 to 1979 before earning a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 1980. Ilkin played a variety of positions on both the offensive and defensive lines during his time with the Sycamores before settling down at center. During his playing career, he was named honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference three times.
Following that, he was drafted in the sixth round of the 1980 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he went on to have a memorable professional career that included two Pro Bowl appearances in 1989 and 1990. He was a member of five Pittsburgh Steelers AFC Championship teams throughout his 13-year career with the team.
Following his retirement from the Green Bay Packers following a season in 1992, Ilkin successfully transitioned to the radio booth. Before retiring this past June to focus on his struggle with ALS, he spent 23 years behind the microphone in the Steelers’ radio booth.
In 1998, Ilkin was inducted into the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame, and he will be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ring of Honor Class of 2021. He was also chosen to the All-Time Steelers Team.
Ilkin was honored with former ISU football player Ron Carpenter at the 2021 Indiana State home opener on August 28 at Memorial Stadium, with the Carpenter/Ilkin Football Endowment named after the two athletes to help the Sycamores football program.
