Tokyo Olympics: Tom Pidcock earns a gold in the men’s mountain biking
With a strong victory in the men’s mountain bike cross-country, Tom Pidcock won Great Britain’s third Olympic gold of the Tokyo Games.
The 21-year-old from Leeds took the lead midway through the race and never looked back, finishing ahead of Switzerland’s world number one Mathias Flueckiger and Spain’s David Valero to win Britain’s first Olympic gold.
Pidcock’s victory came after he injured his collarbone in training two months prior.
Six days after surgery, he was back on his bike, declaring that he would win in Tokyo.
He trained in a heated tent at home to prepare for the scorching temperatures, and it paid off as he managed the tough course and conditions far better than the field, finishing 20 seconds clear.
“I’m always better when I take control of myself,” Pidcock stated. I take my own lines and move at my own speed. I was OK once we got started; all of my nerves dissipated and I was able to focus on the race.
“It’s unlike any other race I’ve ever seen. The Olympics are bigger than any sport. You compete and represent your country, and everyone in your country is rooting for you, regardless of their favorite sports. It’s all about national pride, and it’s incredible.”
