Smith-Milner, a versatile big man with three-point shooting, previously played in the ANBL for Melbourne United, the Phoenix’s cross-town rivals, from 2015 to 2020, including their championship run in 2018.
On the Phoenix roster, he will join fellow Tall Blacks Reuben Te Rangi and Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa, as well as former Breakers bench player Judd Flavell, who is also an assistant coach. Yanni Wetzell, a marquee Breakers signing, also spent his debut pro season there in 2021.

Smith-Milner had been passed over for the Covid-delayed NBL21 season, but surprised the Phoenix with his dazzling skill, deft inside-out game, and excellent leadership with the Saints in New Zealand. For the Wellington club, he averaged 14.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 53% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc.
Smith-Milner showed his class in the semifinals, taking command of a struggling Saints team and scoring 30 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in a 99-77 win over the Auckland Huskies. At the half, they were down 50-44.
Melbourne United signed Smith-MVP-winning Milner’s teammate Dion Prewster.
While the Brisbane Bullets signed fellow Saint Taane Samuel as a development player for the ‘21-22 season, indicating that the Australian NBL coaches were keeping a close eye on the Kiwi league.
ANBL jobs were also awarded to Canterbury Rams big man Jack Salt (Brisbane), Otago centre Sam Timmins (Breakers), and Nuggets import Isaiah Moss (Brisbane) for their performances in the New Zealand league.
“I was grateful we got to win that championship which motivated me to try win another NBL championship with this new club that’s been in the league for a few years now. I’m really looking forward to it,” Smith-Milner said.

After previously working with Smith-Milner at Melbourne United and the New Zealand Breakers, Phoenix coaches Simon Mitchell and Flavell know precisely what they’re getting. At various points in his career, he has also played alongside Kyle Adnam, Te Rangi, and Le’afa.
