The hijackers, commanded by the Lebanese Ziad Samir Jarrah, quickly took control of the jet, deactivated the autopilot, and informed passengers, “Continue to sit [sic] for the time being. Onboard, we have a bomb.”
Beamer and the rest of the passengers were herded into the plane’s cargo hold. The jet reversed course in six minutes and was on its way to Washington, D.C.
