Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada, ranked No. 16, won 22-24, 21-18, 15-13 after trailing 10-4 in the first set.
“We gave ourselves more than enough chances to win,” Claes added. “We got through it first, came out on top, and let them back in. Everyone is nice out here, so we let that door open a crack and here we are, lost.”
Claes stated, “I believed that (Sponcil’s serve) was in.” “It’s a bummer, but that third set shouldn’t have been necessary. We just let them back in because we did such a wonderful job in the second.”
“This is a critical learning experience for us. That’s something you’ve got to see in this contest. It was a significant change from assisting to assisting. That’s a significant part of what we’re going to strive to improve on.”

Sponcil, 24, of Phoenix, and Claes, 25, of Los Angeles, are the country’s youngest Olympic beach volleyball team, having both attended UCLA (after starting at Loyola Marymount) and USC, respectively.
“We just weren’t taking care of the ball on side-outs,” Sponcil said. “That doesn’t help the momentum of the game. You have to rely on defense, and that wasn’t working. We let them back in it, and I didn’t take care of the ball.”
