Wallabies’ Quade Cooper ‘only just had the legs’ to land match-winning penalty

Quade Cooper says he “simply had the legs” to score the game-winning penalty against the Springboks, in a performance that Wallabies coach Dave Rennie believes might lead to the 33-year-old Quade Cooper being named the team’s starting ten for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

On the Gold Coast on Sunday night, the much-maligned playmaker defeated world champions South Africa in his first test in over four years, with Australia prevailing 28-26.

Even after the 33-year-old was drafted into the squad during his Japanese off-season earlier this year, mostly as a coach to developing No.10 Noah Lolesio, the Rugby World Cup scenario would have sounded strange.

But it no longer does as a composed Cooper hit a perfect eight off the tee, including the match-winner after the siren from 40 yards out and 12 metres in from touch in a miraculous comeback.

Cooper is now in a position to keep Lolesio on the bench while also delaying the return of James O’Connor (groin), who, at 31 years old, could become the team’s junior playmaker, according to AAP.

Cooper, who hadn’t played a professional game in five months, was chosen because “we didn’t think it was a danger,” Rennie added.

“It was difficult to leave him out based on his training form.

“If he was in the Springboks, he’d be a young man (at the 2023 World Cup).

“Of course he could (be the Wallabies’ No.10 at the World Cup), but we’re not planning ahead at the moment.”

Only just had the legs’ to land match-winning penalty

“He was ecstatic to be given the opportunity and went above and above, and I know he’ll be eager and accessible for the remainder of the year.”

Cooper says he just had to believe in himself when it came to the game-winning kick.

Cooper commented after the match on Stan Sport, “I’d had a kick from a similar location just before that.”

“It was only a matter of getting the legs to get it over. I looked at it and asked to myself, “Is this your ego telling you that you want to take the kick?” ‘Should I think about what will benefit the team?’

“I glanced over and exchanged a few words with Hodgey” (Reece Hodge). He was on my side. If your peers believe in you, you must believe in yourself. We spend a lot of effort into stuff like this. It’s not so much about the kick as it is about sticking to the grind every day. When you’re on a high, it’s difficult to keep going and not get ahead of yourself. Take advantage of it for what it’s worth. It was one of the most memorable test matches I’ve ever witnessed.”

Cooper resisted the impulse to throw long cut-out passes in his 71st test, instead serving his outside men with sharp, clean ball or kicking for territory, according to the Associated Press.

His throw to Samu Kerevi set up Andrew Kellaway for Australia’s lone try, while the Springboks scored three rolling maul tries, fresh off a 2-1 series triumph over the British & Irish Lions and two straight wins over Argentina.

Quade Cooper Career

Cooper signed a one-year contract with the Melbourne Rebels on October 23, after being approached by Rebels coach Dave Wessels. After a strong start to the season, the Rebels struggled in the second half and ended 11th overall, missing out on a wild card position in the playoffs. Cooper’s Rebels won two games at home and away against the Queensland Reds, who were coached by Brad Thorn, who had “exiled” Cooper from his home franchise.

Cooper was then notably absent from Wallabies squads for the test season, with Lealiifano expectedly ahead of him given the Brumbies’ run to the finals, but Michael Cheika preferred Waratahs Bernard Foley and Kurtley Beale as backup options ahead of him, as well as Rebels teammate Matt To’omua, who, interestingly, rarely featured at flyhalf for the Rebels or Leicester. After some poor performances in the pool stages, Cheika’s Wallabies would go on to crash out of the World Cup in the quarter finals.

He then joined the Kintetsu Liners in Japan for the 2019–20 season, where he would play halves opposite longtime teammate Will Genia. Cooper might return to Super Rugby with the Rebels after signing a collaboration agreement with Kintetsu and the Rebels in 2020.

Cooper was rumored to be invited into the Wallabies squad in 2021, prior to the first test of the Bledisloe Cup, due to Australia’s COVID limits and a lack of form among the Australian flyhalves during the Super Rugby AU and Trans Tasman seasons. He was officially named to the squad on July 25th, alongside former Reds teammate Duncan Paia’aua, as newcomers to Dave Rennie’s test setup.

In 2005, his squad tied for the Queensland GPS Premiership with Brisbane State High School in his first year as coach.
