Nhlanhla ‘Lux’ Dlamini, the head of Operation Dudula, has been apprehended.

On Thursday afternoon, Dlamini was apprehended. While police have yet to confirm Dlamini’s arrest, a source said his incarceration stemmed from charges filed against him on Wednesday at the Dobsonville police station.

Dlamini was apprehended immediately after leaving the Kaya FM studios in Parktown, where he conducted an interview, according to Operation Dudula deputy chairperson Dan Radebe. “He was told it was connected to the Dobsonville case,” Radebe added. “He didn’t resist, so it was a painless arrest.”

Radebe stated that he was at the Johannesburg central police station around 8.30 p.m. when Dlamini was being held.

“We’re still looking into the facts,” Radebe said, “but he’ll most likely appear in the Roodepoort magistrate’s court [on Friday].” Victor Ramerafe, a Soweto resident whose home was reportedly ransacked by Operation Dudula members on Sunday, had filed a lawsuit against Dlamini and Operation Dudula members.

The gang claimed it was acting on information from the neighborhood that Ramerafe’s residence was being used to sell drugs. Although no narcotics were discovered during the raid, Ramerafe claimed that his property was damaged.

The EFF had applauded Ramerafe’s decision to charge Dlamini with violence and theft. In recent weeks, Operation Dudula and other Dudula groups have been in the news for their activities geared primarily at evicting illegal immigrants and removing them from informal trading spaces.
