Maeta’s winding romantic history with one complex on-again/off-again relationship that continues fueling her raw lyricism.

Maeta’s Early Life and Family

Singer-songwriter Maeta was born on March 16, 2000, and is currently 23 years old. She was raised in a nurturing, musical household that encouraged her creative passions from a young age. Her parents are John Hall (Father) and Tobie Hall (Mother).

Maeta grew up alongside an older brother named Jonathon Tobias Hall and a sister named Georgia Bray.

Maeta has a mixed ethnic heritage, including German ancestry on her great-great grandmother’s side, which she discussed in a May 2021 interview.

She was named after her great-grandmother and often finds herself clarifying the pronunciation of her unique name (pronounced “MAY-ta”).

The family moved from Pike Township to Zionsville when Maeta was a teenager. She embraced the more structured environment of regular schooling after a period of online classes.

Maeta’s Personal Relationships and Love Life

Maeta is very open about the inspiration she draws from her romantic relationships, heartbreaks, and innermost feelings when it comes to her songwriting. As she stated: “Everything I sing about on my project I went through.”

In multiple interviews, Maeta discussed one particular long-term, on-again/off-again romantic connection that keeps resurfacing in her life. Though this person is not officially her boyfriend, she confessed to continually “going back to them for years” and this relationship serves as creative inspiration for “honestly every project.” She also dubbed this person “one of my best friends” who she expects will never permanently disappear from her world, though the circumstances of their bond continuously evolve.

When elaborating on this repetitively rekindled connection in her chat with Vibe magazine, Maeta emphasized the intensity of her feelings, deeming this romance “personal” with elements of passion, toxicity, excitement, and drama over the years. She summarized the overarching theme as encapsulating all dimensions of their bond – “the ups and downs” from the “very passionate” start, through the messy “little toxic” mid-point where they broke up for months, to the finale where she decides to wholeheartedly embrace love despite its messiness.

Ultimately Maeta explained that through examining her own winding relationship journey closely in her lyrics, she is attempting to solve the elusive riddle of what exactly love is and how it operates. She believes love strikes suddenly and does not present clear answers, stating “I keep saying I’m young and in love, but maybe I’ll feel like this for the rest of my life, I don’t know.”

Maeta’s Musical Journey

Maeta’s professional music career began taking shape around 2012-2013 when she acquired an Atlanta-based manager and started recording original material. She steadily garnered initial attention by sharing content on Instagram and Soundcloud.

In 2019, Maeta’s breakthrough arrived with the launch of her debut EP “Do Not Disturb” led by its standout opening track “Babygirl.” This momentum continued via her collaboration “Color Blind” with Ambré and the acclaimed Kaytranada-produced single “Teen Scene” featuring Buddy in 2020, which earned millions of streams.

After building industry buzz, Maeta signed with the renowned label Roc Nation in the spring of 2021. On April 30th she dropped another EP “Habits” containing the song/video “Toxic,” earning high praise from executives.

Additional 2021 highlights included a music video for fan favorite “B**ch Don’t Be Mad” and festival performances. Though 2022 was relatively quiet with just one single “Frank For You,” 2023 has so far seen Maeta collaborate with Thundercat and Vic Mensa before releasing her buzzy track “S(EX)” and its creative multifaceted EP.

Maeta unveiled her first complete studio album in June 2023, titled “When I Hear Your Name.” Spanning 13 tracks, it taps star talent like Ty Dolla $ign and Lucky Daye as features, as well as songwriting/production from SZA, Demi Lovato, Kehlani, and others.
