Lauren Cho is a 30-year-old Asian woman from New Jersey who went missing on June 28, 2021. She was living with her friends and ex-boyfriend Cody Orell at the time of her disappearance. Officials verified Thursday that the remains discovered in Southern California belong to Lauren “El” Cho, a New Jersey woman who vanished in June.
The positive identification brought a sad end to the months-long search for Cho, a Korean American whose case resurfaced during the discussion over racial inequities in missing people coverage in the news media.
According to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, “the cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results.” “Until toxicological findings are obtained and new information is discovered as a result of those results, no more information will be disclosed on this matter.”
The human remains were discovered on Oct. 9 near her last known location, an artist-oriented Airbnb accommodation in Yucca Valley, roughly 30 miles north of Palm Springs.
Authorities had searched the compound and surrounding area several times, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division became involved in late September after local investigators “exhausted their investigation.”

Per Orell, Cho had gotten upset and walked away from the converted bus without her phone, food, or water when he had gone inside the bus around 3 pm. He called the local sheriff’s office around 5:13 pm for additional help after searching with some friends for Cho.
The original search party reportedly never found any of Cho’s tracks and responding law enforcement only found the tracks of the search party, leading Orell to believe that Cho got into a vehicle with someone as she had been planning on meeting an unknown individual later in the week.
When she was last seen, she was walking away from the place where she was staying. She was last seen wearing a yellow T-shirt and jean shorts near Benmar Trail and Hoopa Road, off of California State Route 62.
Investigation
Police and rescue are searching the area on foot, including with K9 teams. The area has been also searched from the air with fixed-wing aircraft. The Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station told reporters that the sheriff’s helicopter and members of the search and rescue unit have been actively searching for Cho since her disappearance although they believe she is voluntarily missing due to no evidence of foul play. The Specialized Investigations division of the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department began assisting the Morongo Basin Station in the search for Cho in September 2021.
Orell and other friends have been actively attempting to bring awareness to Cho’s disappearance using social media to spread her missing poster and have hung missing person flyers around Bombay Beach.
