Cardozo was enrolled in a program at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington when the Indo-Pakistani War broke out in 1971. His battalion, the 4/5 Gorkha Rifles, was already on the move in the eastern theater. Cardozo was sent to replace the battalion’s second-in-command, who was killed in combat. During the fight of Sylhet, he arrived in time to accompany his battalion on the Indian Army’s first heliborne mission. His Gorkha regiment gave him the nickname Cartoos sahib since his first name was difficult to pronounce. In Hindi, the term “cartoos” refers to a cartridge.
