When Quince was young, his father left his mother, brother, sister, and him. His mother struggled deeply with this and became obsessed with trying to get Quince’s father back instead of taking care of her children.

Due to the neglect at home, social workers got involved and Quince, along with his siblings, were removed from their biological mother’s care. The three children were placed together in a foster home that transitioned into adoption.

“My adoption was bittersweet, because I had parents who were loving enough to [adopt] four strangers,” he said. “That’s a beautiful story, however, they’re very old school with a ‘you spare the rod, you spoil the child’ sort of mentality. So they only knew what they knew– and that was to beat it out of me.”

Quince told

Quince has conflicted feelings about his adoption. He is grateful his adoptive parents cared enough to take in four strangers. However, they had an authoritarian parenting approach that involved harsh physical punishment which Quince feels damaged him psychologically.
